Curriculum Vitae
The German-Moroccan singer Miriam Sabba, born in Wuppertal, Germany, received her first vocal lessons in her hometown from the opera singer Dora Brockmann. She studied voice and music education at the Cologne University of Music and Dance under Prof. Barbara Schlick, graduating with a diploma in concert.
She furthered her studies through master classes with Kurt Widmer, Klesie Kelly-Moog, Ingeborg Danz, Anna Reynolds, and Kammersängerin Brigitte Fassbaender, among others. She continues to study under her professor, Barbara Schlick. She also received further guidance from Renate Biskup in Dresden. In 2004, she was awarded a scholarship by the Richard Wagner Association in Wuppertal.
Her repertoire ranges from Monteverdi (Poppea in “L’Incoronazione di Poppea”) to modern works (Venus in Benjamin Schweitzer’s ‘Dafne’, the world premiere of ‘Longe’ by Thomas Kupsch). She also feels very much at home in the concert hall and has built up an extensive repertoire. Even while still a student, she received her first guest engagements at the Schleswig-Holstein State Theater. Subsequently, she was engaged as a lyric coloratura soprano at the Mittelsächsisches Theater in Freiberg/Döbeln. During this time, she sang, among other roles, the title role in Traetta’s “Antigone,” Ännchen, Pamina, and Adina.
In 2010, the audience at the Döbeln Theater voted the soprano their favorite performer. Guest performances with the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch took the soprano to the Wuppertal stages as Diana in Gluck’s “Iphigenia in Tauris” and to the Arts Festival in Hong Kong.
Miriam Sabba has had a passion for art song since her student days. She has given concerts not only in Germany but also in her second home, Morocco, performing in Marrakesh. In November 2016, she embarked on a tour of the United States and, together with her accompanist Jan Michael Horstmann, presented a series of successful recitals featuring Schumann’s “Frauenliebe und Leben” and Arnold Schoenberg’s “Book of the Hanging Gardens.” With her Moroccan ensemble “Hamimi,” she organizes fairy tale evenings paired with European classical music. In recognition of her artistic achievements, the Moroccan King, His Majesty Mohammed VI, invited her to the throne anniversary celebrations in Rabat in the summer of 2014.
In the summer of 2012, Miriam Sabba was named Singer of the Year by the critics of the Sächsische Zeitung. This was followed by a permanent engagement with the Landesbühnen Sachsen. Her major roles there include Mozart’s Susanna, Oscar (“Un ballo in maschera”), Dorella in Wagner’s “Liebesverbot,” Gretel, Adele, Anna Reich, and Créuse in Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s “Médée.” During the 2014–15 season, she expanded her repertoire to include Mozart’s Konstanze from “Die Entführung aus dem Serail.” In the summer of 2016, she once again sang the role of Pamina. This time in a production on the Felsenbühne in the spa town of Rathen in Saxon Switzerland. In October 2016, the singer made her debut as Stella in “A Streetcar Named Desire” by Sir André Previn. Since January 2017, she has appeared in the monodramatic opera “The Diary of Anne Frank” by Grigori Frid. Miriam Sabba performed as a soloist at the closing concert of the Handel Festival in Halle in June 2018, where she had previously performed in 2016 and 2017. Since August 2017, the singer has been working as a freelance artist.
Teaching is also playing an increasingly important role in the singer’s life. She works as a vocal coach for both adults and children, with both professionals and amateurs, and taught music as a vocal instructor at the International Stiftungsgymnasium Magdeburg from 2021 to 2024. Art and teaching have a very positive, mutually enriching effect on one another and provide new inspiration for both fields.
